Styrene (EB)
Styrene is the feedstock behind polystyrene, ABS, EPS and a universe of plastics โ and China produces and consumes more of it than the rest of the world combined. The Dalian EB contract gives traders direct access to one of Asia's most actively traded petrochemical spreads, with tight tick sizes and a night session that tracks global crude in real time.

What Moves Styrene
- Pure benzene and crude linkage. Styrene is made from benzene, which anchors it to crude oil. The benzene-styrene spread is the industry's profitability gauge: wide spreads pull in new supply from Chinese plants, narrow spreads shut capacity down.
- Downstream EPS/PS/ABS operating rates. Demand is measured weekly through operating rates at polystyrene, expandable PS and ABS plants. When downstream margins compress, EB demand fades within days โ the chain is short and transmission is fast.
- New refinery capacity startups. China's styrene capacity has been expanding rapidly. Each new plant startup shifts the domestic supply curve, and commissioning schedules are watched as closely as earnings reports.
- Port inventory in East China. Jiangsu port stocks are the physical market's scoreboard. Inventory builds signal oversupply and cap rallies; rapid draws confirm demand and fuel squeezes.
- Crude oil volatility events. OPEC meetings, geopolitical supply shocks and inventory report days transmit through benzene into EB within a single session, especially during the night session when US data drops.
Why Traders Watch It
EB is a spread trader's contract: it lives and dies with the benzene crack and downstream margins. Its small tick size (ยฅ5/lot) makes it accessible, but the same leverage cuts both ways during petrochemical-chain liquidations. Watch East China port inventory releases and plant maintenance calendars โ both move the market within minutes. Night-session liquidity is decent but thinner than day; scale stop orders accordingly.
