Container Freight Index (EC) (EC)
In 2023 the Shanghai INE launched the world's first containerized freight index futures (EC) โ a derivative written directly on the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index Europe route (SCFIS). Global container shipping carries roughly 80% of world trade by volume, and this contract is the only exchange-listed way to trade freight rates. Volatile, event-driven and unlike anything else on the board, EC attracts macro traders looking for exposure to global trade flows with pure index simplicity.

What Moves Container Freight Index (EC)
- Red Sea and Suez routing disruptions. Since late 2023, Red Sea security incidents have forced cape re-routings around Africa, absorbing effective capacity and exploding freight rates. Geopolitical headlines are EC's single biggest volatility source.
- EU import demand. SCFIS Europe tracks Shanghai-to-Europe container rates. European retail inventory cycles, port congestion at Rotterdam/Hamburg and EU consumption data form the demand base.
- New vessel deliveries. The global container orderbook is historically large. Newbuild deliveries from Korean and Chinese yards add capacity that caps rallies; delivery slippage and scrapping offset it.
- Blank sailings and alliance capacity management. The big three alliances deliberately cancel sailings to defend rates. Weekly blank-sailing data from Lloyd's List and eeSea is watched tick-for-tick by EC traders.
- CNY/USD exchange rate. Freight is quoted in USD but EC settles in CNY. RMB moves mechanically reprice the index โ a unique FX overlay no other commodity contract carries.
Why Traders Watch It
EC is the most event-driven contract on the Chinese boards: war-risk headlines, canal transit data and carrier rate announcements can move it 10% intraday. The exchange deliberately runs elevated margins and tighter position limits โ respect both. There is no night session, so gaps against overnight geopolitical news are routine; never hold oversized positions through weekends or Red Sea headlines. Liquidity concentrates in the front two months; deferred months trade wide.
