It's 9:40 PM in Chicago. You're flat on everything, scrolling your screen out of boredom, and then you notice it: rebar futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange are moving. Not drifting โ moving. A construction steel contract in a market most Western traders have never touched is putting in a trending session while you sleep.
That's not an anomaly. Rebar is one of the most heavily traded and most policy-sensitive contracts in the entire Chinese commodity futures complex, and its price is essentially a real-time referendum on China's construction economy. If you've ever wanted to trade rebar or iron ore, you need to understand what actually drives it โ because it is not the same playbook as crude oil, gold, or the E-mini.
Let's break it down the way we'd explain it to a trader sitting next to us.
First, Know the Instrument: Rebar Contract Specs
Before any macro analysis, get the mechanics right. Rebar (ticker RB) trades on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), and its sister contract โ the one you'll almost always compare it to โ is iron ore (ticker I) on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE).

A few things worth internalizing:
- Rebar is a small contract. At a price of roughly 3,500โ4,000 yuan per tonne, one lot controls around 35,000โ40,000 yuan of notional โ modest by global futures standards. That makes it accessible, but it also means fees and slippage matter proportionally more than they do on big index or energy contracts.
- Iron ore is the heavyweight. One lot is 100 tonnes, so each tick of 0.5 yuan is worth 50 yuan. It moves fast and it moves big. Many traders learn rebar first precisely because iron ore punishes sloppy risk management.
- The night session matters. Chinese steel contracts trade from 21:00 to 23:00 Beijing time, which lands in the US morning and European afternoon. Overnight sessions often set the tone for the next day's direction, and liquidity in the night session is real, not token.
- Margins are dynamic. Chinese exchanges adjust margin requirements and position limits frequently โ often around holidays like Chinese New Year or National Day, and during periods of volatility. Exchange minimums for steel products have historically sat somewhere in the high single digits to low teens as a percentage of notional, but treat any specific number as provisional and check the current notice.
Demand: Rebar Is a Bet on Chinese Construction
Strip away everything else and rebar is reinforcing steel for buildings and infrastructure. Its demand curve is, more or less, the demand curve for Chinese construction. That gives you three lenses.
Real estate โ the dominant driver, for better and worse
Property development has historically absorbed the majority of rebar demand. This means the single most important class of information for a rebar trader is property-sector policy: mortgage rules, developer financing conditions, land sales, and home purchase restrictions. When Beijing tightened developer leverage with the "three red lines" framework around 2020, the subsequent distress across major developers became one of the defining bearish forces for steel demand into 2021 and 2022. Conversely, when authorities ease mortgage rates or lower down-payment requirements, rebar traders treat it as a demand signal โ sometimes correctly, sometimes ahead of reality.
The lesson: policy announcements move rebar faster than actual construction data does. The market trades expectations of demand before it trades demand itself.
Infrastructure โ the counterweight
When property is weak, the government typically leans on infrastructure spending โ bonds issuance for local governments, rail and road projects, grid investment. Infrastructure demand doesn't fully offset property weakness (it's a smaller share of the pie), but it's often enough to set the relative tone. A common pattern: property deteriorates, infrastructure stimulus gets announced, and rebar finds support on the stimulus headline even while the underlying demand picture is soft.
Seasonality โ the rhythm you can actually plan around
Chinese construction has a calendar, and it's one of the more reliable patterns in commodities:
- Spring pickup: Construction resumes after Chinese New Year (late January to February). Demand builds through March and April โ often called the "golden March, silver April" window.
- The summer rainy season: Heavy rain and heat in JuneโJuly slow outdoor construction, especially in the south.
- "Golden September, Silver October": The autumn construction peak, traditionally the strongest demand window of the year.
- Winter slowdown: From roughly November through February, northern construction shuts down, partly for cold, partly for winter air-quality restrictions in industrial regions.
Seasonality is a bias, not a guarantee โ a severe property downturn can flatten a seasonal rally โ but ignoring the calendar is a rookie mistake in this market.
Supply: Policy Is the Wildcard
If demand tells you the direction of the fundamental argument, supply policy often decides who wins it. Steel in China is produced largely by state-linked mills, and the government treats steel output as a policy lever โ for environmental targets, energy consumption goals, and industrial consolidation.
Three mechanisms to watch:
- Production cuts and output caps. Authorities have repeatedly set targets to cap or reduce crude steel output in a given year. When those targets look at risk, expectations of mandatory cuts can rally rebar prices sharply, because traders price in tighter supply.
- Environmental restrictions. Winter air-quality campaigns in major steel regions โ Tangshan in Hebei province is the classic example โ restrict mill operating rates. These are scheduled, announced, and well covered in Chinese financial media, so they're tradeable if you follow the flow.
- Sector-wide intervention. The Chinese government will, when it deems necessary, directly intervene in commodity markets. The 2021 commodity rally โ which took thermal coal, steel, and other industrial inputs to extraordinary levels before regulators stepped in with supply increases, price "guidance," and margin hikes โ is the canonical case study. The lesson is not "don't trade policy-driven rallies." The lesson is never assume a policy-driven move is finished until policy itself turns, and never assume it can't be reversed by policy overnight.
This is the biggest cultural adjustment for traders from Western markets: in China, the single largest market participant is the state, and its objectives are not profit maximization. Fighting a clear policy trend is a strategy with a short life expectancy.
Cost: Iron Ore, Coking Coal, and the Spread Trade
Rebar's production cost is dominated by raw materials โ iron ore and coking coal/coke. This creates two practical opportunities.
First, cost support and cost squeeze. When iron ore rallies hard, mills' margins compress, and either rebar follows upward (cost push) or mill profitability collapses and supply discipline eventually kicks in. Watching the iron ore chart is effectively watching rebar's cost floor move.
Second, the rebarโiron ore spread. This is one of the most actively traded relative-value structures in Chinese commodity futures. The logic: rebar price minus a normalized iron ore price approximates mill profit. If you believe steel mills' margins will expand (say, because production cuts restrict steel supply more than ore demand), you go long rebar, short iron ore. If you believe ore supply will tighten while steel demand stagnates, you do the reverse. It's a cleaner expression than outright direction because it strips out some of the macro noise both legs share.
One caution: iron ore is heavily import-dependent (Australia and Brazil dominate supply), so it carries global shipping and weather risk that rebar doesn't. The two contracts are related, not twins.
Your Practical Analysis Routine
Here's a checklist we'd actually run before taking a rebar position โ no academic theory, just what moves the tape:
- Weekly inventory data. Steel inventory levels (rebar inventories at mills and in the social/warehouse channel) are the market's heartbeat. Rising inventory with falling prices = demand is losing to supply. Rapid destocking in MarchโApril or September = demand is real. This data is published weekly and is the most-watched number in the space.
- Mill operating rates and margins. How much capacity is running, and can mills afford to run it? Low margins plus high inventories is a bearish combination; low inventories plus falling operating rates often sets up a squeeze.
- Property and infrastructure policy flow. Mortgage rules, home purchase restrictions, local government bond issuance, and any language about "stabilizing" the property sector. In this market, a Politburo meeting readout can be worth more than a month of price charts.
- PMI and credit data. China's official manufacturing and construction PMIs, plus monthly credit (loan) data, give you the macro pulse. New loan growth is a decent proxy for whether money is actually flowing into real activity.
- The daily tape itself. Volume and open interest changes on the SHFE rebar contract tell you whether a move is speculative or positional. Rising open interest on a rally is conviction; a rally on shrinking open interest is often short-covering.
And a note on information flow: the primary sources here are Chinese โ exchange notices, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), and domestic financial media. If you can't read Chinese, you're operating at a latency disadvantage. Build a pipeline of translated sources, because by the time a policy story appears in Western media, the Chinese futures market has usually already traded it.
Trading It: Risk Notes That Actually Matter
A few hard-won practical points for anyone trading Chinese commodity futures for the first time:
- Respect the night session gap risk. Policy announcements frequently land outside the day session. A headline at 10 PM Beijing time can gap the night session open. Size positions assuming gaps, not continuous fills.
- Holiday margins are real. Chinese exchanges routinely raise margins before long holidays because global markets keep moving while Chinese markets are shut for a week. Plan around Chinese New Year and National Day the way you'd plan around a US election.
- Contract rolls matter. Chinese steel contracts have active months concentrated around construction season. Check volume migration before rolling โ liquidity can be thinner in some months than you'd expect from a market this size.
- Start with rebar, not iron ore. Rebar's smaller contract size and somewhat gentler volatility profile make it the better classroom. Graduate to iron ore โ and to spreads โ once you've survived a full seasonal cycle.
None of this is a promise of profits. It's a map of the terrain. Rebar rewards traders who understand the Chinese policy cycle and construction calendar, and it punishes those who treat it like a Western industrial commodity with a different ticker.
