You've backtested a solid breakout system. Your risk per trade is a clean 1%. You decide to try it on Chinese commodity futures โ rebar looks liquid, iron ore moves beautifully. You place your first trade with what feels like a conservative size, and within two sessions your drawdown is three times deeper than your model predicted. Nothing went wrong with the strategy. What went wrong is arithmetic: you sized the position off margin, not off the contract's notional value, and Chinese futures contracts are much bigger than most retail traders assume.
This article fixes that. We'll walk through how contract multipliers actually work in China, why margin tells you almost nothing about risk, and a sizing formula you can apply to any contract on the Shanghai, Dalian, Zhengzhou, or Shanghai INE exchanges.
Why Chinese Contract Specs Catch Traders Off Guard
Every futures contract in the world has a multiplier โ the number of units of the underlying you control with one lot. The problem for traders coming from Western markets is that Chinese multipliers are set in local units, and the resulting notional values don't map neatly onto what you're used to.
A few widely traded examples:
- Rebar (SHFE): 10 metric tons per lot, minimum tick of 1 yuan per ton. That's 10 RMB per tick โ small ticks, but a full point move is worth 10 RMB per lot.
- Iron ore (DCE): 100 tons per lot, tick size of 0.5 yuan per ton. One tick = 50 RMB. A 10 yuan/ton move โ an ordinary day for iron ore โ is 1,000 RMB per lot.
- Thermal coal (ZCE): 100 tons per lot, tick of 0.2 yuan/ton, so 20 RMB per tick.
- Copper (SHFE): 5 tons per lot with a 10 yuan/ton tick โ 50 RMB per tick. At prices that have run in the tens of thousands of yuan per ton, one lot of copper controls notional value in the hundreds of thousands of RMB.
- Crude oil (INE): 1,000 barrels per lot. One lot of INE crude is a serious position, not a starter trade.
Notice the pattern: the contracts that look cheapest per tick โ rebar, soybean meal at 10 tons/lot โ are manageable, but the flagship industrial commodities carry heavyweight multipliers. If your mental benchmark is a micro contract or even a CME e-mini, iron ore and crude oil will feel like trading with a lever, because you effectively are.
The number that matters: notional value
Before you think about margin, compute this for every contract you trade:
Notional value per lot = current price ร contract multiplier
For rebar trading around 3,000โ3,500 RMB per ton, one lot controls roughly 30,000โ35,000 RMB of steel. For iron ore around 700โ800 RMB per ton, one lot controls roughly 70,000โ80,000 RMB of ore. Same trader, same account, wildly different exposure per contract โ and this is before you've decided anything about leverage.
Margin Is Not Risk โ Especially in China
The single most common sizing error among traders new to Chinese commodity futures is treating the margin requirement as the position's risk. It isn't. Margin is a performance bond; your risk is the distance to your stop, multiplied by the contract multiplier, multiplied by your lot count.
China's futures margin system has a structure worth understanding:
- Exchange minimum margin: Each exchange (SHFE, DCE, ZCE, INE) sets a floor, typically in the high single digits to low teens as a percentage of notional value.
- Broker add-on: Your futures broker adds a buffer on top, so your effective margin is usually somewhere around 10โ15% of notional in calm markets.
- Dynamic adjustments: Exchanges raise margins when volatility spikes, when positions approach delivery months, and around major holidays like Chinese New Year, when markets close for an extended stretch and gap risk rises.
That last point is critical. During the thermal coal rally in 2021 โ when prices roughly doubled in a matter of weeks before government intervention slammed the door โ the Zhengzhou exchange raised margins and narrowed price limits repeatedly to cool speculation. Traders who sized positions at the old margin levels suddenly faced higher requirements and found themselves facing forced reductions at the worst possible moments.
The lesson: margin in China is a moving target that tightens exactly when conditions get dangerous. Size your positions so that a margin hike is an inconvenience, not a liquidation event.
A Position Sizing Formula That Actually Works
Here's the framework we'd recommend for any retail trader in Chinese commodity futures. It's the same 1% logic used by serious risk managers everywhere, just adapted to Chinese contract specs.
Step 1: Define your risk budget
Decide the maximum you'll lose on any single trade โ 1% of account equity is the standard starting point. On a 100,000 RMB account, that's 1,000 RMB per trade. If your account is in USD, convert at your broker's rate and keep the discipline in your base currency.
Step 2: Define your stop in price terms
Not in R and R multiples, not in "feel" โ in actual yuan per ton, per barrel, per gram. A structural stop below a consolidation range on rebar might be 40 yuan/ton. A volatility-based stop on iron ore using ATR might be 15โ20 yuan/ton. The number comes from your strategy, not from what you can afford.
Step 3: Compute risk per lot
Risk per lot = stop distance ร contract multiplier
Rebar with a 40 yuan/ton stop: 40 ร 10 = 400 RMB risk per lot. Iron ore with a 15 yuan/ton stop: 15 ร 100 = 1,500 RMB per lot.
Step 4: Divide and round DOWN
Lots = risk budget รท risk per lot, rounded down to a whole number.
On the 100,000 RMB account above: rebar gives you 1,000 รท 400 = 2 lots. Iron ore gives you 1,000 รท 1,500 = 0.66 โ zero lots. You cannot trade that setup at 1% risk, and the formula just saved you from a 1.5% loss on a single trade.

Run this table before every session, not from memory. Prices move, stops move, and risk per lot moves with them.
The Granularity Problem: When One Lot Is Too Many
That iron ore example exposes an issue specific to trading Chinese commodity futures on smaller accounts: you can't size in fractions of a lot. When one lot of a contract carries more risk than your budget allows, your only honest options are:
- Skip the trade. This is the correct answer more often than beginners think. Missing a trade costs nothing; oversizing one costs real money.
- Tighten the stop only if the market justifies it. Never shrink a stop to fit a position size โ that's backwards, and it converts good setups into coin flips.
- Trade a smaller-multiplier contract in the same complex. If iron ore doesn't fit, rebar or hot-rolled coil on SHFE might express a similar view on Chinese steel and construction demand at a fraction of the per-lot risk.
- Grow into the contract. Treat contracts like INE crude oil and SHFE copper as instruments you earn the right to trade by building account equity, not ones you start with.
A useful rule of thumb: if the minimum lot forces you to risk more than 2% of your account, that contract is not tradeable for you at your current equity. Write it down, revisit quarterly, and trade what fits.
Limit Moves and Event Risk: The China-Specific Wildcard
Chinese exchanges apply daily price limits โ caps on how far a contract can move in one session, typically in the range of roughly 4% to 12% of notional depending on the product and current exchange settings. Combined with margins set at broadly similar levels, this means a single adverse limit-down day can cost you a double-digit percentage of the notional value of your position.
Two episodes every China futures trader should know:
- The 2021 thermal coal squeeze: Prices roughly doubled within weeks, then reversed violently after policy intervention. Traders caught on the wrong side faced consecutive limit moves in one direction or the other โ stops didn't fill anywhere near their levels.
- The 2020 oil crash: Global crude collapsed amid the pandemic demand shock and the price war. INE crude fell hard alongside international benchmarks, and extreme volatility triggered successive exchange adjustments to margins and limits.
The practical takeaway is not to avoid these markets โ it's to size for the worst session, not the average one. If a full adverse limit move on your position would exceed a few percent of your account, you are too big, regardless of where your stop sits. Stops in China are best thought of as exit intentions, not guarantees; overnight gaps through holidays and limit-locked sessions can and do slip past them.
Also mind contract month liquidity. Many Chinese commodities trade most actively in specific delivery months โ the so-called 1-5-9 pattern on the black-chain complex (January, May, September). Sizing calculations should always be run on the contract you'll actually trade, and rolling positions adds a small layer of execution risk worth accounting for.
Putting It Together: A Pre-Trade Checklist
Before you click buy or sell on any Chinese commodity futures contract, run this five-point check:
- 1. Notional check: Price ร multiplier. Do you know what one lot actually controls right now?
- 2. Risk-per-lot check: Your stop distance ร multiplier. In RMB, not in points.
- 3. Lot count check: Risk budget รท risk per lot, rounded down. If the answer is zero, the trade is a pass.
- 4. Stress check: What happens if the market goes limit-against-you tomorrow, or margin gets raised before the holiday? Could you hold without forced liquidation?
- 5. Liquidity check: Are you in the dominant contract month, and is open interest deep enough for your size?
None of this is glamorous. That's the point. Position sizing is where trading Chinese commodity futures stops being an intellectual exercise and starts being a craft. The traders who last in this market aren't the ones with the cleverest entries โ they're the ones whose arithmetic survives a limit-move week.
