You've backtested a solid breakout system. Your risk per trade is a clean 1%. You decide to try it on Chinese commodity futures โ€” rebar looks liquid, iron ore moves beautifully. You place your first trade with what feels like a conservative size, and within two sessions your drawdown is three times deeper than your model predicted. Nothing went wrong with the strategy. What went wrong is arithmetic: you sized the position off margin, not off the contract's notional value, and Chinese futures contracts are much bigger than most retail traders assume.

Why Chinese Contract Specs Catch Traders Off Guard

Every futures contract in the world has a multiplier โ€” the number of units of the underlying you control with one lot. The problem for traders coming from Western markets is that Chinese multipliers are set in local units, and the resulting notional values don't map neatly onto what you're used to.

Notice the pattern: the contracts that look cheapest per tick โ€” rebar, soybean meal at 10 tons/lot โ€” are manageable, but the flagship industrial commodities carry heavyweight multipliers. If your mental benchmark is a micro contract or even a CME e-mini, iron ore and crude oil will feel like trading with a lever, because you effectively are.

The number that matters: notional value

Before you think about margin, compute this for every contract you trade:

Notional value per lot = current price ร— contract multiplier

For rebar trading around 3,000โ€“3,500 RMB per ton, one lot controls roughly 30,000โ€“35,000 RMB of steel. For iron ore around 700โ€“800 RMB per ton, one lot controls roughly 70,000โ€“80,000 RMB of ore. Same trader, same account, wildly different exposure per contract โ€” and this is before you've decided anything about leverage.

Margin Is Not Risk โ€” Especially in China

The single most common sizing error among traders new to Chinese commodity futures is treating the margin requirement as the position's risk. It isn't. Margin is a performance bond; your risk is the distance to your stop, multiplied by the contract multiplier, multiplied by your lot count.

China's futures margin system has a structure worth understanding:

During the thermal coal rally in 2021 โ€” when prices roughly doubled in a matter of weeks before government intervention slammed the door โ€” the Zhengzhou exchange raised margins and narrowed price limits repeatedly to cool speculation. The lesson: margin in China is a moving target that tightens exactly when conditions get dangerous. Size your positions so that a margin hike is an inconvenience, not a liquidation event.

A Position Sizing Formula That Actually Works

Step 1: Define your risk budget

Decide the maximum you'll lose on any single trade โ€” 1% of account equity is the standard starting point. On a 100,000 RMB account, that's 1,000 RMB per trade. If your account is in USD, convert at your broker's rate and keep the discipline in your base currency.

Step 2: Define your stop in price terms

Not in R and R multiples, not in "feel" โ€” in actual yuan per ton, per barrel, per gram. A structural stop below a consolidation range on rebar might be 40 yuan/ton. A volatility-based stop on iron ore using ATR might be 15โ€“20 yuan/ton. The number comes from your strategy, not from what you can afford.

Step 3: Compute risk per lot

Risk per lot = stop distance ร— contract multiplier

Rebar with a 40 yuan/ton stop: 40 ร— 10 = 400 RMB risk per lot. Iron ore with a 15 yuan/ton stop: 15 ร— 100 = 1,500 RMB per lot.

Step 4: Divide and round DOWN

Lots = risk budget รท risk per lot, rounded down to a whole number.

On the 100,000 RMB account above: rebar gives you 1,000 รท 400 = 2 lots. Iron ore gives you 1,000 รท 1,500 = 0.66 โ†’ zero lots. You cannot trade that setup at 1% risk, and the formula just saved you from a 1.5% loss on a single trade.

The Granularity Problem: When One Lot Is Too Many

Limit Moves and Event Risk: The China-Specific Wildcard

Chinese exchanges apply daily price limits โ€” caps on how far a contract can move in one session, typically in the range of roughly 4% to 12% of notional depending on the product and current exchange settings. Combined with margins set at broadly similar levels, this means a single adverse limit-down day can cost you a double-digit percentage of the notional value of your position.

The practical takeaway is not to avoid these markets โ€” it's to size for the worst session, not the average one. If a full adverse limit move on your position would exceed a few percent of your account, you are too big, regardless of where your stop sits. Stops in China are best thought of as exit intentions, not guarantees; overnight gaps through holidays and limit-locked sessions can and do slip past them.

Also mind contract month liquidity. Many Chinese commodities trade most actively in specific delivery months โ€” the so-called 1-5-9 pattern on the black-chain complex (January, May, September). Sizing calculations should always be run on the contract you'll actually trade, and rolling positions adds a small layer of execution risk worth accounting for.
