Because your maximum allowable risk is $100, you can safely trade one lot. You cannot trade two lots, because that would risk $142—exceeding your 1% rule. You must adapt your lot size to the volatility of the moving averages, not just slap a fixed lot size on every trade.

Practical Application: Making the System Survive

3. Filter the Chop (Optional): If the pure system proves too painful, many traders add an ADX (Average Directional Index) filter. For example, only take the EMA crossover if the ADX is above 25, indicating a strong trend. This keeps you out of the sideways consolidation that destroys crossover systems.
