Q1: The Spring Festival Lull
January and February are dominated by the Lunar New Year. Textile mills shut down, workers go home, and demand flatlines. PTA inventory builds up rapidly during this period. Unless there is a massive macro shock in crude oil, Q1 is generally a sluggish, range-bound environment. Don't expect explosive breakouts here.
Q2 & Q3: The Summer Prep and Peak
Spring brings the restart of industrial activity. By late Q2 and into Q3, textile mills ramp up production for the autumn/winter clothing lines. This is the traditional peak demand season. Additionally, summer in China often brings power constraints. Remember the 2021 energy crunch that saw thermal coal rally to historic highs? During periods of power rationing, chemical plants are often the first to be told to curtail operations. If PTA plants are forced to cut power while downstream demand is peaking, you get explosive supply squeezes.
Q4: The Year-End Rest
By November and December, the main export orders for winter textiles have largely shipped. Polyester plants begin to draw down operations for the year. PTA enters another phase of inventory accumulation. However, Q4 is also when global macro factors (like year-end oil market dynamics) can cause sudden volatility.
A Practical Trading Framework for PTA

Step 1: Determine the Macro Regime
